The 39 Steps
Criterion Theatre, London until 9th February 2008
John Buchan’s The 39 Steps – memorably filmed by Alfred Hitchcock
in 1935 – is thrillingly adapted for the stage.
Nothing has been cut from this hilarious and spectacular version of Britain’s
most spell -binding thriller – legendary scenes include the chase on
the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical
bi-plane crash ever staged and the death-defying (or nearly!) finale at the
London Palladium!
With four actors playing a minimum of one hundred and thirty nine roles,
The 39 Steps is the most astonishing theatrical tour de force of the year.

"Both performers are excellent, but it’s
the two other actors who, helped by simple props, turn the show into something
truly theatrical"
Benedict Nightingale, The Times
"Much of the charm of the pocket-sized West End hit
lies in its attempt to retell Alfred Hitchcock's version of John Buchan's
spy caper on a shoestring budget" Jasper Rees, The Telegraph
"If only this playful spirit could have been twinned
with heartfelt storytelling. But it isn't; the story is thoroughly undermined"
Brian
Logan, The
Guardian
"Rupert Degas and Simon Gregor play all the other
roles in the show and have tremendous fun impersonating everyone from underwear
salesmen to railway porters and policemen" The Stage

Audience's reviews:
This is a super show with characters changing roles left,
right and center. It is a laugh out loud comedy taking influence from John
Buchan's 1915 novel. The show uses techniques from shadow puppetry to physical
theatre and I would recommend it to anyone.
