Much Ado About Nothing
Olivier, National Theatre, London from 10th December 2007 to 10th January
2008
I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me. Promise
of a masked ball hastens the men from battle to the festive house of Leonato,
where beautiful, wealthy young Hero catches the eye of Claudio, the dashing
soldier. Instantly attracted to each other, they rush into marriage. There
is no such hurry for seasoned singles Beatrice and Benedick, whose scorn
for love and penchant for verbal sparring provoke their scheming friends
to plot a happy ending. No, the world must be peopled. When I said I would
die a bachelor, I did not think I should live till I were married. Beatrice
and Benedick are played by Zoë Wanamaker and Simon
Russell Beale in
Shakespeare’s dark and dazzling comedy.
