The Taming of the Shrew
Old Vic Theatre, London until 17 February 2007
Edward Hall directs all-male company Propeller in two comedies of mistaken
identities, transformations and deceptions.
In The Taming of the Shrew, a man playing a boy dresses up as a girl,
which confuses Christopher Sly; whilst in Twelfth Night, a man playing a
girl is disguised as a boy, which confuses everybody. Padua and Illyria,
illusion or reality? Does it matter? What begins as a trick played on a drunken
groom in Padua ends in the bittersweet confusions of an island called Illyria.
In both plays, Shakespeare asks us to reflect on the nature of happiness
and true love.
Propeller imbue Shakespeare's stories with a freshness that appeals to young
and old alike, and their work has received acclaim around the world.
