Following His Dark Materials and Coram
Boy, the National's
new epic is based on the celebrated novel by the children's Laureate (2003-05)
Michael Morpurgo. Actors working with magnificent, life-sized
puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company lead
us on a gripping journey through history. Suitable for 12 year olds and above.
"Luke Treadaway gives a searing performance as Albert the
teenager who loves Joey from a foal and eventually goes off to war underage
to experiences terrible losses and suffering - all beautifully suggested
with a fragmented filmed-on backdrop, clever lighting and some pretty good
props such as full-size WW1 tank" Susan Elkin, The Stage

Audience's reviews:
Handspring Puppet Company live up to their well deserved
reputation with their adaption of Michael Morpurgo's 'War Horse'. The opening
of the show sets the scene brilliantly as the audience are introduced to
Joey (a horse). The puppets are beautiful in their intricacy and minimalism
and are skillfully brought to life by the puppeteers. The rhythm of the piece
is good and Luke Treadaway is brilliant as Albert, creating a very touching
and intense relationship with Joey. A great piece of theatre, which is enhanced
by its versatile set, beautiful shadow animations and haunting folk music.
